As compendium to the Collective Habitat 1997 – 2012 exhibition, Gallery Gachet presents an evening of film and dialogue, featuring the screening of Shameless: The ART of Disability & I Would Not Live in Heaven taking place on Fri Feb 1st, 7 – 10pm at 88 East Cordova.
In honour of Gallery Gachet’s long standing mandate around raising awareness on issues relating to art and disabilities, this intimate evening of moving image explores the relationship between the artistic process and the challenges of visible and invisible disabilities.
The feature movie, Shameless: The ART of Disability is an NFB documentary directed by the renowned disabilities activist, Bonnie Sherr Klein and features 5 artists: Persimmon Blackbridge, Geoff McMurchy, Catherine Frazee, David Roche and Bonnie Sherr Klein herself. Art and activism are the starting point for a funny and intimate portrait of five surprising individuals with diverse disabilities. Packed with humour and raw energy, this film follows the gang of five from B.C. to Nova Scotia as they create and present their own images of their disabilities.(NFB website)
Opening the evening is the documentary short, I Would Not Live in Heaven by Zola, created by past Gallery Gachet Member, Zola. This video is a moving piece of work about art, Gachet, living with mental health issues and ultimately, the triumph of the human spirit. (Zola)
Following the screenings, join us for Q&A with filmmakers and featured artists. We will also be launching our ART-i-FACT: 88 East Cordova Performance Series, the state of perceived folly catalogue!

Gallery Gachet has double wide front doors and a wheelchair ramp. There are no steps in the space and the single washroom has a bar.
