In Contempt
Opening Friday / October 21st / 6 pm – 8 pm.
Running October 22nd – November 25th  / Tuesday – Saturday / 12pm – 6pm

Trigger Warnings: Sexual violence, sexual content, references to medical settings, institutional and colonial violence.

Translated from Cree as the act of being contemptible, Aiyana Joe Wood’s multidisciplinary exhibition visualizes the nuances of her identity as an Indigenous trans femme woman and sheds light on her childhood spent in institutions that were established to subvert her autonomy and humanity.

At its core, “In Contempt” acts as a tribute to agency. Aiyana challenges the vilification of her embodiment; her strength and resilience are marked through minimalist aesthetics and bold interventions. The artworks act as an investigation of Aiyana’s past, an attempt to make sense of her fragmented memories and gain understanding through art and process. Visitors are invited to immerse themselves in a contemporary Indigenous experience and question their positionality and privilege in relation to the First Peoples of these lands.

To the visitors of this exhibit, the artist hopes that her survival will give hope to others on their individual journeys in life and reassure them that there is strength in appreciating where they are and being okay with who they are. To her past, present and future self, Aiyana says, “I love you the way you are.”

Join us for the opening of In Contempt, from 6 – 8pm at Gallery Gachet / 9 W Hastings Street! A welcoming ceremony, light refreshments, and food will be provided.

[REDACTED] Art Fix Workshop

[REDACTED] Art Fix Workshop
Monday / October 31 / 2pm – 4pm

This workshop explores the power of redaction, collage, and assemblage. Attendees are invited to reconfigure text, images and printed materials, exercising their ability to challenge and create alternative narratives. This drop-in workshop runs in conjunction with Aiyana Joe Wood’s exhibition: ᑯᐦᐹᑌᔨᑖᑯᓯᐃᐧᐣ | kohpâteyitâkosiwin, translated from Cree as “the act of being thought of as contemptible” (of being seen as worthless, or deserving of scorn). This multi-media installation amplifies the artist’s experience of transitions, in and through child welfare documents and mental health assessments. Aiyana Wood will be present via Zoom to facilitate the workshop alongside in person facilitators Kat and Indigo.

There will also be a tabling event launching Gallery Gachet’s updated resource list and community member publications, pamphlets, and zines.

15th Annual Oppenheimer Park Community Art Show

15th Annual Oppenheimer Park Community Art Show

Opening Friday / September 2nd / 6pm – 8pm.

Running September 3rd – October 7th  / Tuesday – Saturday / 12pm – 6pm

Join us for the opening of The 15th Annual Oppenheimer Park Community Art Show, 6 – 8pm at Gallery Gachet / 9 W Hastings Street! Light refreshments and food will be provided. The Oppenheimer Park Community Art Show features artwork and insight of artists and community leaders connected to or displaced from Oppenheimer Park, the green space known as Lek’lekí, the Powell Street Grounds, Paureu gai, the backyard of the Downtown Eastside; the unceded land of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) peoples.

A community partnership between Oppenheimer Park/Carnegie Community Centre Association and Gallery Gachet, this annual show began in 2008 in anticipation of changes, challenges, and losses in a pre-Olympic city. Although the world looks very different in 2022, we are proud to carry on the tradition of the Oppenheimer Show for its 15th consecutive year. For some artists, participating in the show is an annual tradition, while others are contributing for the first time. This year’s iteration of the Oppenheimer exhibition revolves around futurity and questioning what ‘opening up’ means.

Gallery Gachet would like to thank the participating artists and the community-minded organizations that uplift and centre the voices, stories, and experiences of residents of the DTES. Thanks to the Oppenheimer Park team for their contribution and collaboration as we strive to work in-line with our mandate of fostering community and utilizing artistic means to tell the stories of the residents of the DTES.

Call For Board Members

INTRODUCTION TO ORGANIZATION / Gallery Gachet is excited to announce a call for Board Members. We are a thriving, collaboratively run arts production, education and presentation space located in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver on the stolen, sacred, and ancestral homelands of the xwməθkwəy’əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and səl̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. We are a unionized workplace with a collective agreement covering our employees. We support participants as artists, educators and curators. Through artistic means we aim to demystify and challenge issues related to mental health and discrimination, in order to educate the public and promote social and economic justice. We believe that the expression and practice of art and active participation in culture-building is a human right, and that art and culture are critical elements of a healthy society.

DIVERSITY & INCLUSION STATEMENT / Gallery Gachet values the contributions that individuals who identify as members of marginalized communities bring to our organization. We encourage, among others, Indigenous people, people of colour, people with disabilities, people identifying as LGBTQIA2S+, formerly incarcerated or institutionalized people, recent immigrants and people from working class backgrounds to apply. We also understand that applicants may experience a number of these identities simultaneously in ways that reinforce and nuance their experience. We are committed to creating an organization as diverse as the communities we serve.

BOARD MEMBER POSITION DESCRIPTION / Gallery Gachet’s board provides governance to our non-profit organization. As Gachet moves through a period of organizational restructuring and renewal, Board Members will support the greater sustainability and operations by strengthening our governance process. Board Members attend monthly Board Meetings, develop the strategic direction of the organization with management and staff, approve policies and procedures, review relevant documents and provide advice as necessary, and help guide the creation and implementation of future committees and membership. Board Members are elected for a two-year term with the possibility of renewal. The time commitment may fluctuate throughout the year, but is anticipated to be about 4 hours a month.

APPLICATION PROCESS / Please submit by email a letter of interest with your CV to: executivedirector@gachet.org

Application deadline: September 15, 2022 @ 5pm.

We thank all those who apply! Please note only those selected for a short interview will be contacted.
