The Art Cart’s first kids event!

The Art Cart, a Gachet-Oppenheimer Park partnership project, embarked on its very first kids event this past weekend — Cart With Heart!

The Art Cart is a mobile arts sales shop & gallery for community members and artists who work or live in the Downtown Eastside. The greatest thing about the Art Cart is its versatility and how it can be transformed for different uses in different communities — for Cart With Heart it did double-duty as a kids arts space and picnic table. Scroll down to see images from the whole morning.

Cart with Heart was a Walk Talk Chalk project by Olivia Lohan and Ali Lohan, in conjunction with Art With Heart, an Oppenheimer Park art program for kids with Erin Johnston. It was also a community collaboration with Gladys Lee and Swallow Zhou.

The group met up at Oppenheimer Park. Oppenheimer is a partner in the Art Cart project and we recently held our first Art Cart Operator training there.

The group headed off with the Art Cart — very easy to handle and navigate — balloons in hand.

The Art Cart traveled around with its posse and kids did chalk drawings of the neighbourhood.

The neighbourhood art walkabout ended with a picnic lunch (stored in the Art Cart) at Gallery Gachet, where the kids took in the current exhibit, Art Of The Intuitive.

Artists in our midst!

The Art Cart is heading out to the DNC Pigeon Park Sunday Street Market throughout the summer — come visit us!

We welcome community partners and ideas for the Art Cart’s use! If you want to get in touch drop the Art Cart Coordinator Alex Leslie a line at artcart@gachet.org.

The Art Cart thanks the Community Arts Council of Vancouver, Metro Vancouver Arts Grants, and the City of Vancouver’s Great Beginnings Program.
