ANNUAL CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
Deadline for submissions: June 15th, 2013
We welcome proposals that challenge mental health stigmas, barriers to full social, cultural, and economic participation; as well as ideas that focus on public engagement (actively involving the audience in an interactive dialogue and cultural mediation), disability arts, or art for social change. We actively look to create and maintain collaborations within the mental health and cultural sectors, as well as the local Downtown Eastside neighbourhood. Exhibitions may thematically coincide with other events and festivals.
Gallery Gachet supports artists that have experienced marginalization through their mental health, trauma and/or abuse, by working for cultural and economic justice. However, it is not necessary that artists have experienced mental illness or social marginalization personally, but the work must speak to our mandate in specific and interesting ways. Our programming features a range of art practices from contemporary to outsider, and a diversity of mediums: photography, video, performance art, drawing, 3D, installation, ceramics, textiles and more. For more information on Gachet’s vision and Basis of Unity, please see http://gachet.org/about.
We accept proposals for solo, group, juried, curated, or major exhibition projects; as well as screenings, workshops, performances and collaborations. We pay CARFAC fees, and provide support for openings, catering, marketing, A/V equipment, and installation.
Please include in your submission package:
1. Visual work: 10 – 20 images (slides or digital images on CD or DVD) clearly identified with name, number, title, dimensions, and a numbered slide list.
2. Performance work: a short video that typifies your work.
3. A written proposal stating a well-thought out theme for the exhibition (250 – 500 words,) explaining what you wish to do and any special requirements.
4. A C.V. or biography, charting your education and exhibitions history.
5. Artist statement. (Optional)
6. A self-addressed, stamped envelope to return your submission. Please allow 3-4 months for consideration. The gallery retains accepted submissions until the exhibition.
Please e-mail submissions to Lara Fitzgerald, programming@gachet.org, or drop off clearly labelled packages to “Gallery Gachet Annual Submissions” during gallery open hours, Weds – Sun 12 – 6pm.
