Deconstructing Ableism – AORTA WORKSHOP
AORTA WORKSHOP FALL 2013 TOUR
Deconstructing Ableism
Sat, October 12th, 2013 11.00 – 5.00pm
People with disabilities face discrimination from individuals and systems built without them in mind that prevent them from being able to participate in or access spaces, resources, employment, or housing. This workshop will examine the systems of oppression that affect people with mental, physical, and emotional disabilities.
We will develop analysis and understanding of how these systems function at individual, institutional, and cultural levels and strategize ways to affect change. We will talk about how to create cultures and communities that are welcoming, accessible, and celebrating of people with all kinds of abilities. Participants will leave with a better understanding of how ableism operates, how to recognize it, and tools for creating change in their communities.
NOTE: Pre-Registration Required!
Space for this workshop is limited– we will be confirming with registrants in the coming two days. RSVPing on Facebook does not count as registering! (We will also be creating a wait list, in case people cancel or don’t show). Thank you so much! Register online at: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/V5R3DK7
If you do not have computer access, you can register in person at the gallery.

ABOUT AORTA
AORTA is a collective of educators devoted to strengthening movements for social justice and a solidarity economy. We work as consultants and facilitators to expand the capacity of cooperative, collective, and community based projects through education, training and planning. We base our work on an intersectional approach to liberation because we believe that true change requires uprooting all systems of oppression.
