addiction: dicte is to say with authority; ad- means to or on to
The idea of addiction is similar to the idea of attachment, of being held to something beyond one’s control. You can see how this may work.
In the DTES, substance addiction is both visible and political – because the personal is political, and we are persons with much in common. Elsewhere in Vancouver, addiction may seem quiet, but these addictions take on profoundly destructive forms as well: an addiction to money and the illusion of control, the ‘choice’ to live a conventional life, the dictate to always OBEY, the overwhelming addiction to a world-system that would destroy us all.
Substances that have been used by people may be the skin of the problem, but fighting wars and killing people, whether for poppies and coca leaves or diamonds and oil, is the heart of the matter.
Be free. Know your addiction.
