Gallery Gachet is seeking a motivated, creative and organized individual who will work collaboratively with the staff/collective team to develop, support and implement the delivery of cultural services and operations related to Gallery Gachet’s mandate, while contributing to the financial health of the gallery.

Gallery Gachet is a dynamic collectively-run arts production, education and presentation space located in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside (DTES) built to empower participants as artists, administrators and curators. We strive to provide a focal point for dialogue amongst outsider/dissident artists. Through artistic means, we aim to demystify and challenge issues related to mental health, disability issues and social marginalization in order to educate the public and promote social and economic justice. We see a time and place where people who have experienced marginalization feel fully supported in their struggle for a creative life and career, including access to adequate housing, studio space and economic security. We believe that the expression and practice of art and active participation in culture-building is a human right, and that art and culture are critical elements of a healthy society.

Job Responsibilities

Organizational Development:

  • As a part of the staff/collective team take a proactive role in developing and implementing the vision for Gallery Gachet.
  • Liaise with the other staff and collective to play an active role in strategic planning for the Gallery.
  • Provide programming information to all Committees.
  • Based on a mentorship model, coordinate and support initiatives that advance collective, volunteer and community members professional arts visibility.

Programming:

  • Work with and report to the Programming Committee.
  • Provide direction and coordinate all public programs and exhibitions, with the support of the Programming Committee.
  • Liaise with and support artists and/or curators around all exhibitions and projects, inclusive of installation and strike/de-install of all shows.
  • Liaise with Finance Administrator around the implementation of a programming budget and assist in writing grant proposals
  • Coordinate and jury prospective artwork, arrange the annual submission process, identify internal and external jurors, and respond to artists in a timely manner.
  • Working with Communications Coordinator and Communications Committee coordinate the design and production of marketing materials.
  • In consultation with collective and committees, initiate and implement outreach opportunities and special projects with various sectors (mental health, Downtown Eastside community, arts), to advance the overall profile, positioning, and mandate of the gallery.
  • Support artists and/or curators with overall promotion strategies.
  • Coordinate internal communications for the gallery.
  • Represent Gallery Gachet at various meetings or events on and off site.
  • Manage relevant contracts/documentation for all programming.

Knowledge, Abilities & Skills:

  • Experience with exhibition curation, program coordination, and/or project management, preferably in an arts organization or non-profit.
  • Knowledge and/or experience in the operations of artist-run centres.
  • Knowledge and/or experience with issues related to mental health diversities, trauma, and addictions.
  • Experience working with Downtown Eastside communities.
  • Interest and experience working in a collaborative and lateral manner with staff team and collective members.
  • Experience working in non-profit or grassroots community organizations, and knowledge of collective, empowerment, and capacity-building models.
  • Sound knowledge of office procedures and file management; ability to prepare and maintain reports and correspondence related to the work.
  • Must be able to operate all office equipment and a variety of Mac and software programs.
  • Must have graphic design and strong computer skills with a variety of software (Office programs, such Adobe CS suite, Acrobat, and/or other relevant programs)
  • Ability to exercise considerable judgment and action in performing all aspects of the work.
  • Ability to perform duties with little or no direction, and at the same time keeping the Programming Committee, Staff and Collective informed.
  • Must have the ability to multi-task, function effectively and specifically within deadlines.

Authority:

  • Reports to Collective on a monthly basis.
  • Reports to Staff Collective, Human Resources and Programming Committees.

Remuneration and contract term:

The Programming Coordinator will be paid $20.00hr, with a work week of 25 hours, plus full medical benefits and holiday pay pending a three-month probation period. The 25 hours per week is expected to be performed on site. Details of a work schedule can be discussed.
