Going Back Home – Barbacena, Brazil
Direct from Brazil, Gallery Gachet is proud to host the Going Back Home photography exhibition as part of the Second World Mad Pride Biennale.
Consolidated under the National Humanization of Health law in 2003, The Going Back Home Program represents a movement, begun in 1970’s, toward fulfillment of a historical demand for psychiatric reform in Brazil.
Under this web of services, large mental asylums in Brazil with legacies of human rights abuses (“violent institutions”) have lost licensing and closed their doors through federal intervention. The Going Back Home exhibition documents the face of the deinstitutionalization process happening in Barbacena county where individuals with histories of long-term institutionalization at Barbacena Mental Hospital undergo a state-supported process of community resettlement, in the context of “Therapeutic Residences” and “Psychosocial Centres for Assistance.”
