This year’s art exhibition incorporates the theme of Riverview. Opened in 1913, Riverview (also named Essendale) housed a population of 4,630 in 1951. It is a controversial site and pivotal subject in the history of the mad movement in BC, and as a subject within artists’ work, a source of pain, survival, struggle, and healing.
Ongoing screening during exhibit: Searching For Sanctuary: What Is Home To Me? In this powerful and evocative film, people with schizophrenia talk about what it means to them to take part in a University of Calgary participatory action research project investigating housing for people with severe mental health issues. “An inspiring film that illustrates the importance of inclusion and empowerment in mental health services.” Simon Davis, Vancouver Coastal Health Authority
