Lab – The Parasite Project

Shanell Brooke Papp (Lethbridge): Lab
Kelly Haydon (Vancouver): The Parasite Project

Shanell’s work deals with the problem of scientific objectivity in relation to the human body. Using the medium of sculpture, she studies and explores human anatomy. The yarn body will be exhibited on a gurney, adding glands and deciding on the sex for the body. It will also include fillet crochet (lace) life size panels of surgery scenes.

Haydon’s drawings arise from the artist?s personal experience with illness and the while very sick with undiagnosed parasites, she was restricted to making small ink drawings on long narrow pieces of paper. Weird, biological images emerged. After initial medical treatment, she discovered through research that a few of the drawings were indicative of some of the microscopic critters she hosted. Haydon began using multi-plate techniques in order to combine abstract biological images with notes and tables.
