Maleta [suitcase] – On Tour at Vancouver Museum

A selection of the Sinag Bayan Cultural Arts Collective exhibit (on display at Gachet in October) travels to the Vancouver Museum. The exhibition is the result of a collaborative art project tackling the theme of migration, and in 2008 will tour to Toronto and Montreal.

Maleta [suitcase] includes visual art by emerging and professional Vancouver artists of Filipino descent.  Through a framework of community collaboration, critical engagement and developing art practice, Sinag Bayan engaged the Filipino community and Canadian public to look deeper into issues surrounding migration and participation in Canada.

Participants include Sinag Bayan members, members of community-based organizations like Philippine Women?s Centre of B.C., SIKLAB and Filipino-Canadian Youth Alliance as well as individuals and contacts of the Kalayaan Centre.

The programming is also part of Anniversaries 07, a year-long project marking 1907, 1947, 1967, and 1997, symbolic historical moments for Asian migrants? struggle for justice in Canada. Often these struggles are marked by common trauma and mental health impacts, forming an underlayer for ?new Canadians.?
