Defining Moments: Discovering our Canadian Stories is an art contest and collection that invited youth across the country to create and share artwork that expresses their identity and experience living in Canada.
Throughout 2011 and 2012, with support from Canadian Heritage, TakingITGlobal – a Toronto non-profit that uses technology to empower youth to understand and act on the world’s greatest challenges – gathered over 700 submissions to their online Global Gallery from every province and territory. More than ten artistic mediums are represented, including photography, poetry, acrylic and oil painting, installation, video, sculpture and beadwork.
Engaging youth in dialogue around identity on a personal and national scale is an avenue to address the concerns young people have as they move into adulthood and fortify their roles as key stakeholders and decision makers of Canada’s future. The Defining Moments collection depicts a breadth of topics and personal narratives including migration, immigration, memory, nature, sport, health, architecture, political landscape and tradition.
The June Exhibits taking place in Halifax, Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver feature a selection of the outstanding work that was submitted throughout the year. Official winners of the Defining Moments contest will be announced on July 1st, 2012 and will mark the launch of the Travelling Exhibit, consisting of artwork that includes the 26 top entries. The Traveling Exhibit will be featured in locations across the country before culminating in Canada’s Capital at Winterlude in February 2013.
