Art Cart at the Powell Street Festival

The workshop taken place at the Art Cart during the Powell Street Festival 2013 will invite peopleto learn how to write their name in Japanese characters. People will have an opportunity to writetheir name by themselves and they can wear “Hello my name is…” sticker with their name in Japanese at the Festival.

This workshop not only provides an opportunity to learn Japanese culture, but also it takes away anonymity that people have without name tags. Although many people may not be able to read Japanese, the nature of name tag will play an important role. For example, it would work as an icebreaker and promotes communication.
As one of Japanese proverbs says ichigo ichie, or Treasure every encounter, for it will never recur.

Born in Yokohama, Japan in 1987, Shumpei Kato completed his Bachelor of Design (2010) degree in Emily Carr University of Art + Design with a major in Industrial Design. Growing up in a family that practices Ikebana, Kato developed his design sensibility at a young age under the influence of the ancient Japanese art of flower arrangement. After more than ten years of practice in the Kouzan School of Ikebana, Kato has recently started applying his aesthetic theories in the field of photography, illustration and book-making. As he digs deeper into different mediums, Kato has found ways to balance and harmonize the world of art/design with his diverse cultural background. Kato is also a founding member of Vancouver Design Bureau.
