Mad Pride – Call for Submissions

Gallery Gachet’s 2015 Mad Pride exhibition, Develop Madness signifies, among other things, the transformation of anarchic, organic and historicized urban space into commodity. Gentrification is the development process experienced in Gachet’s neighbourhood, Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside – which is unceded Native land and the site of successive displacements in the 20th century. Now, after years of being derided as a “ghetto” of the poor, addicted and mentally ill, it’s become valuable land and a development site, and the community is being evicted, priced out, reinstitutionalized, and disappeared.

Here are some possible questions to ponder as you prepare your submission.

  • Consider the transforming city –How can we use art to assert our rights to our homes, neighbours, and city?
  • Can we re-imagine the city and public space as a site of wholeness, inclusion, and healing, integrating art and life, freedom and justice?

Mad Pride is an international movement created by psychiatric survivors, consumers, folks labeled “mentally ill” ― all who proudly reclaim the words mad & crazy, and those who stand in solidarity with us.

This year the Mad Pride exhibition will showcase ten artists who live with mental illness and psychiatric control, and who live with the pressures of development in everyday life will be selected to exhibit one piece of art in this year’s show.
