I’m Finished With Horses – Laura Babak-Nagy Retrospective

Video, sculpture and paintings from an interdisciplinary artist and mother who lost her struggle with cancer.

Laura was a much-loved and respected member of the Gallery Gachet Collective. Following exhibitions in several BC arts venues, and while caring for her son Emery, Laura planned to return to ECIAD to pursue graduate studies in fine arts and launch a new area of studio practise.

Laura Babak-Nagy’s work has often drawn from the iconic figures and symbolism of horses. Horses have always been a rich gateway to the human imagination; images of horses span the history of art and contemporary visual culture, from Paleolithic cave paintings to advertising images.  Horses are embedded in our creative consciousness.

In the work of Babak-Nagy, horses become a flexible symbol through which her current concerns are filtered, from dealing with deaths of close friends and family to the challenges of motherhood. Correspondingly, horses provide the connecting thread to an interdisciplinary art practice that includes painting, installation, mixed media sculpture and video.  In analysis of nostalgia and mortality, Laura Babak-Nagy’s paintings have more insight into the condition of humans than horses.  Curated by Diane Jacobs, with Laura’s family.
