Maleta [Suitcase]
Maleta [suitcase] is a collaborative art project tackling the theme of migration, to culminate in an art exhibit in October 2007. Through a framework of community collaboration, critical engagement and developing art practice, Sinag Bayan hopes to engage the Filipino community and Canadian public to look deeper into issues surrounding migration and participation in Canada.
Participants will include Sinag Bayan members, members of community-based organizations like Philippine Women Centre of B.C., SIKLAB and Filipino-Canadian Youth Alliance as well as individuals and contacts of the Kalayaan Centre.
Maleta is an opportunity for aspiring Filipino-Canadian artists to use their artistic vision to voice the issues of the Filipino community in Canada. In this spirit, Sinag Bayan in partnership with Gallery Gachet has developed a curriculum that we hope will guide participants through not just an artistic process, but an empowerment process as well.
