Protection Paint: The Stories on Stones
Protection Paint: The Stories on Stones, Gallery Gachet?s February exhibition, will feature new works by Tania Willard, Peter Morin, and Maria Hupfield on the theme of grandmother and grandfather stones, connecting to their ancestral stories, protection and healing. Each artist will address these themes by focusing their artworks on the ancestral stories from their Nations.
?This exhibition is about stones, about the stones on the ground and near the river. The stones are grandmothers and grandfathers,? explain the artists.
?These stone people are the oldest people. They are the oldest teachers with good memories of stories, and memories that reach back to the beginning times.?
The stones hold the stories of their community. They are the connection to the land. This connection to the land is an important medicine of healing. This needs to be honoured. Protection Paint comes from this teaching. If we ask these stones for help with our healing they will help us.
The sense of being protected by your grandmothers and grandfathers speaks to those who have survived traumas. The exhibition is looking at ways to express these ideas of protection and healing and presenting them to the larger community of the Downtown Eastside. The artwork will address survival and healing from historical trauma.
