Vancouver’s MPA (Mental Patients Association) was formed in 1970-71 as a grassroots response to deinstitutionalization and tragic gaps in community mental health. Inverting traditional mental health hierarchies, the group had former patients and allies in charge. HomeGround Festival 2018

February 7th, 8th and 9th

This year for the Homeground Gallery Gachet has teamed up with WePress and artist, Jeska Slaterm, to create a project called Starblanket Medicine Mural: Visions for our Community. Festival goers are invited to contribute a diamond piece to a collective Starblanket by drawing or writing their hopes for our neighbourhood. The individual diamonds are to represent the idea that every person has a place in our larger and connected community. Each diamond will be installed as part of an art mural that will be installed at the front entrance of the Carnegie Community Centre. Read More »

MAD CITY: Legacies of MPA

The MPA (Mental Patients Association) was founded in 1971 as a grassroots response to deinstitutionalization and to a crisis in community mental health. Led by former patients and allies, the group initiated many successful social, housing, and employment projects, and in the process challenged the power of psychiatry. MPA left behind its radical roots to become an important service provider, however the story of its early years endures. Read More »

Gallery Gachet Rising: A New Chapter

Gallery Gachet is a member-run society operating in the Downtown Eastside, by and for artists living with a mental illness. For 21 years, over half its annual budget was financed by Vancouver Coastal Health, acknowledging its value to the community and the people who run it, as a part of a continuum of mental health supports. In 2016 that funding ceased, with just a few months notice from VCH, plunging our organization into crisis. Read More »
