Locked Up: The Soul Speaks Out
July 23 – August 19 / Tuesday – Saturday / 12pm – 6pm
Guided by Indigenous Elders and the immense talent & creativity of people in prison, the UBC Art & Justice team distributed art kits to people in prison at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Artists and storytellers were invited to share their voice and vision with us in this upcoming exhibition. There was an overwhelming response from artists and storytellers eager to share their work. Please join us at Gallery Gachet to witness and celebrate the talent of these artists!
Action, Reciprocity, Transformation (ART) & Justice is an Indigenous guided and arts-based initiative intended to support the holistic health and wellbeing of Indigenous and non-Indigenous Peoples in prison during COVID-19 and beyond. Launched at the onset of COVID-19 by researchers based in the University of British Columbia, School of Nursing, in partnership with the Correctional Service of Canada, Pacific Region, the project aims to support social inclusion, empowerment and community building during the immense social isolation and increased mental health harms being experienced by people in prison during the pandemic.
