Open Call for the 15th Annual Oppenheimer Park Community Art Show

Participating artists will receive $125 cash to be paid-out by Gallery Gachet, at the end of the exhibition when the artist comes to pick-up their artwork.

Artwork can be dropped off at two locations:

Gallery Gachet / 9 W Hastings Street / Tuesday – Saturday / 12pm – 6pm

Oppenheimer Park Field House / 400 Powell Street / Everyday / 9:15am – 5pm

Deadline is Monday, August 29 by End of Day

**Please note that the Carnegie is not an artwork drop-off site this year.

The Oppenheimer Park Community Art Show features artwork and insight of artists and community leaders connected to or displaced from Oppenheimer Park, the green space known as Lek’lekí, the Powell Street Grounds, Paureu gai, the backyard of the Downtown Eastside; the unceded land of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) peoples.

A community partnership between Oppenheimer Park/Carnegie Community Centre Association and Gallery Gachet, this annual show began in 2008 in anticipation of changes, challenges, and loss in a pre-Olympic city. Although the world looks very different in 2022, we are proud to carry on the tradition of the Oppenheimer Show for its 15th consecutive year. For some artists, participating in the show is an annual tradition, while others are contributing for the first time.

Gachet Staff Statement

Gallery Gachet is honoured to showcase the works of incarcerated artists in our exhibition Locked Up: The Soul Speaks Out. The Gallery Gachet staff would like to indicate our continuous support towards the efforts made by activists calling for an end to policing minority and disenfranchised bodies and the state-sanctioned acts of violence used as a tool by police to oppress Indigenous and Black Peoples.

Gallery Gachet’s mandate is to utilize artistic means to demystify and challenge social issues of mental health and the disenfranchisement of Minority Bodies. Bringing focus to how the prison industrial complex, policing minority bodies, and mental health policies in prisons further exacerbates the mental health crisis and the trauma that Black, Brown and Indigenous community members suffer due to institutions founded on outdated colonial ideals.

To bring this exhibition to life, we had to interface with institutionalized policies and parameters. To that effect, Gallery Gachet staff is in solidarity with the abolition movement and seeks to highlight the impact that the prison industrial complex and police state has on members of the Black, Brown and Indigenous communities.

The Gachet staff strives to uplift the voices of marginalized peoples as best as we can. The Gachet staff has compiled a list of resources in consultation with DEFUND 604 that speaks to decolonization, prison abolition, allyship and activism that can be found in Gallery Gachet and our website, resources linked here.

We encourage you to attend Prisoner Justice Day to learn more about abolition:

Wednesday, August 10, 6 – 8pm at Trout Lake Park.

Sincerely,

Moroti George (Programming Coordinator)

Vivienne Bessette (Membership & Facilities Coordinator)

Arlo Havixbeck (Communications Coordinator)

Demi London (Executive Director)

Guided by Indigenous Elders and the immense talent & creativity of people in prison, the UBC Art & Justice team distributed art kits to people in prison at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Rainbow Formula

Rainbow Formula / Jujube Jacinto

June 18 – July 20 / Tue – Sat / 12 – 6

Opening: Friday, June 17 / 6 – 8

Gallery Gachet is pleased to present Rainbow Formula, a solo exhibition by Jujube Jacinto.

Jujube is a person of mixed Asian ancestry who has faced difficult and traumatic experiences and circumstances that are rooted in society’s stigma towards people who live with mental illness and racial prejudice. Yet, despite Jujube’s struggles, she carries a feeling of dizzying playfulness, curiosity and hope in the world, all of which is physically embodied in Jujube’s art practice. Rainbow Formula is filled with vivid characters and colourful creatures who find themselves entangled in kaleidoscopic environments that illustrate Jujube’s mind-scape and perception of the world.

Rainbow Formula is a direct testament to Jujube’s strengths as a creative in a time of so much risk and uncertainty, and it reflects Gachet’s mandate of supporting marginalized artists by creating a space for them to showcase their works without constraint. The exhibition will be available for the public every Monday to Saturday from 12 pm – 6 pm at Gallery Gachet at 9 W Hastings St. There will also be an opening event for the exhibition on Friday, June 17th from 6 pm – 8 pm – all members of the public are welcome to attend.

About the Artist / Jujube Jacinto

I am Jujube Jacinto! I am a self-taught visual artist based in Vancouver, B.C. My solo art show is called Rainbow Formula, which has a plethora of colourful, surreal and fantastical works. My zany, vivid characters and creatures seem to emanate a sense of playful innocence and creative imagination. My illustrations depict a visual presence that is by nature wildly coloured, intricately detailed and happily absurd. I enjoy stretching my mind in ways that are almost dreamlike.

I identify as a person of mixed Asian Heritage, who has undergone difficulties of traumatic experiences. That is why I grew more engaged with the pursuit of art. I create art within the themes of everything (all things) and anything (any one thing) … and truly this concept is the reason I call my show Rainbow Formula.

It also happens to be the month of Pride/LGBTQIA2S+ and I warmly welcome diversity and inclusivity, especially to those who might be excluded or marginalized. As someone touched with mental and physical health conditions, I especially want to inspire others in this community on a deeper level. Art can provide a sense of solace, pleasure, therapy, and safety, and therefore is a worthwhile, often exciting, passionate, and healing endeavour.

I found out that the name ‘Jujube’ stems from a type of fruit that is native to Southeast Asia. It has been used to treat conditions like insomnia and anxiety. Despite any struggles that I may have, I truly feel that my love for creating art has never diminished; it continues to bring profound joy to me and inspires others in a direct and transfixed way.

My solo exhibition features a visual display of works that reflect the strength it took for one artist like myself to create a space in an art gallery, like Gallery Gachet, that is magical and otherworldly.
